In the past I haven’t had the best of luck with plants. It’s a talent to be able to kill the most low- maintenance of plants…succulents 😦
But moving on with a positive attitude and the hope to be able to grow something I can enhance my dishes with, I’ve decided to take on growing a herb garden as a challenge this year.
Armed with three gardening magazines (Your Veggie Patch, Grow it yourself and Easy organic Gardening), countless beginner gardening youtube tutorials and help from the gardening staff at Bunnings, I was able to start this side project with my children.
- Birdies  paperbark corrugated raised garden kit(900mm x900mm x400mm): $99.
- 3x bags of  Scott’s Ozmocote plus organics vegetable and herb and potting mix 50litre herb soil (enriched with nutrients, composted manure, blood and bone etc) = $18.79 per bag.
- Seasol organic fertilizer to be mixed with water and  used once a wk to water the soil: $10.38
- The herbs varied from a few bucks and up. I bought basil, strawberries, habanero, lemon thyme, coriander, parsley and chives.
- Watering can $7
- Gardening tools $3.50
- Gardening gloves $7
The plan is …if this works is to get my own compost up and running, an organic vegetable garden and a chicken coop all by the end of the year. Â In the process, whatever food I do grow, I’ll also learn how to preserve my own produce by drying, freezing, pickling and canning. Get the kids involved too. It’s always fun learning new things with your children.
Wish me luck. But also, wish the plants even more luck.
