With Valentine’s Day approaching, I thought I would jot down a few ideas for gifts.
Romancing your partner should not be a stressful event and becoming complacent about your relationship is just as bad. It should not matter whether you have been together for a few months or more than a few years. You should always put the effort in. I can definitely speak from experience and say that 7 years ago I got a packet of cigarettes and half a can of coke for Valentine’s Day… And trust me, I was not impressed.
By now you should know your partner well enough to know what their ideal style of romance is. If unsure, then you have to do some detective work. Start by asking their friends, families for some ideas or about some experiences they have found memorable in their previous relationships. Obviously, don’t replicate those experiences, just use them as inspiration.
For her:
- Pamper her by running a bubble bath and set up champagne, strawberries and her fav magazine whilst you prepare a three course menu with accompanying wines. If you’re not a good cook, I suggest to keep it simple such as a roast (one tray meal) or order in some take-away and set up the table.
- Picnic at the beach or park- antipasto plate, cheese platter with wines. Whatever you like to eat.
- A fun date at the amusement park
- Fun or adventurous. This is something that you both have not experienced before – hot air balloon ride.
- Hire a private boat for a few hours from the marina or have high-tea on the harbour.
- Romantic weekend in a hotel in the city or in the country.
- Trip to the winery and making a personalised wine as a gift.
- Chocolates, balloons and stuff toys-yes it’s cliche but still a winner in my eyes.
- Spa and beauty voucher.
- Subscription to their favourite magazine.
For him:
- Personalised jersey of their favourite team.
- Tickets for a game/ concert (good seating or vip package).
- Cook him his favourite meal, followed by wearing sexy lingerie whilst giving a full body massage.
- Framed autograph/poster of favourite movie/ artist/team. You can pick some of these up from novelty stores or you can look online.
- Gift voucher at favourite store. This could be sporting goods, clothing store etc…
- Designer watch.
- Something adventurous: Jet boat riding/ parasailing, jet skiing around the harbour, followed by a seafood lunch in the city.

- All expenses paid fishing/surf trip.
- Car show/video game expo tickets.
- Subscription to their favourite magazine.
Remember, it’s not all about spending money so please don’t get the idea you have to spend- spend- spend to impress. Other things can be :
- If you can think of songs you share then make a compilation cd.
- A notebook filled with a handwritten message on each page of all the things you like about your partner.
- Make a collage, album or slideshow of your special moments with existing pictures. Don’t forget to choose a song with the slideshow that best describes the two of you (your special song).
- If you remember specific details of the first date you went on, try and incorporate that into what you want to do.It’s generally the little things that count which make your partner feel special and make them appreciate the things you do for them. Enjoy every moment making memories together…
